Foam roller, let the good times roll!
Have you foam rolled today? Foam rolling was first introduced in the 80's and is now making a comeback! Read on for FAQ's, videos and articles about this awesome way to end or start a workout and let the good times roll!
Here's a 20 minute Foam Rolling routine performed by Anita Goa.
BENEFITS OF FOAM ROLLING
1) Prevents Injury & Helps You Recover Fast
Rolling is the single best way to simultaneously increase mobility, boost recovery, and prevent injury without weakening muscles pre-workout (as stretching has been shown to do).
2) Breaks Up Scar Tissue
Instead of simply lengthening the muscle, a foam roller massages muscles intensely, much like a massage from a massage therapist, but without the heavy cost.
3) Improves Mobility And Flexibility
For years, stretching was the standard method to decrease muscle tightness and improve flexibility prior to either working out or performing a sport. Newer research, however, shows foam roller exercises before an activity can lead to an increase in flexibility.
4) Removes Lactic Acid To Aid Recovery
Any time after strenuous exercise the muscles tend to build up lactic acid and an after workout massage help to break this down and remove it from within the muscle tissue.
5) Better circulation
Because blood carries oxygen throughout the body, good circulation becomes crucial to overall health. Among other reasons, a decrease in our circulation can lead to a whole host of problems like numbness in our limbs, impaired cognitive ability (the ability to think clearly!) and a weak immune system. Myofascial release can help improve circulation by breaking up the tight areas where blood flow may become restricted.
6) Stress reduction
Foam roller exercises can help reduce stress post-workout. One study found myofascial release can lower cortisol, your stress hormone that you want to seriously dial down after a strenuous workout.
